EU-India relations (17 January 2024)

The Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted in December 2023 the own-initiative report by Alviina ALAMETSÄ (Greens/EFA, FI) on a European Parliament recommendation to the Council, Commission and the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy concerning EU-India relations.

In 2022, the EU and India marked the 60th anniversary of their bilateral partnership. While this partnership has gained momentum in recent years, it has, however, not yet reached its full potential.

The aim of this recommendation is to broaden and deepen EU-India relations by making progress in priority areas that are in the interest of both sides and the well-being of their respective citizens through enhanced cooperation in various areas, as outlined in the EU-India Roadmap 2025.

The recommendation was adopted in Strasbourg plenary session on 17 January 2024.

India, the situation in Manipur, 13 July 2023

Following recent violent clashes in the state of Manipur, India, which since May 2023 have left at least 120 people dead, 50 000 displaced and over 1 700 houses and 250 churches destroyed, Parliament strongly urges the Indian authorities to put in place all necessary measures to promptly halt the ethnic and religious violence and to protect all religious minorities.

MEPs call on the Indian authorities to allow independent investigations to look into the violence, to tackle impunity and to lift the internet ban. They also urge all conflicting sides to cease making inflammatory statements, re-establish trust and play an impartial role to mediate the tensions.

The European Parliament adopted by 46 votes to 0 with 0 abstentions a resolution on caste discrimination in India.

The resolution was tabled by the ECR, S&D, Greens/EFA, EPP, ALDE and GUE/NGL groups.

Whilst Members acknowledge efforts at federal, state, regional and local level in India to eradicate caste discrimination and applaud the clear stance against caste discrimination taken by many public figures, they remain alarmed at the persistently large number of atrocities and widespread untouchability practices, notably manual scavenging. Despite the efforts undertaken so far, an estimated 170 million Dalits and indigenous Adivasi in India continue to suffer from severe forms of social exclusion.

Parliament urges the Indian authorities to honour their pledges and to implement or, if necessary, amend the existing legislation, notably the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, in order to effectively protect Dalits and other vulnerable groups in society.
