Next AFCO Committee meeting: 24 September

In the context of the exponential growth of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the President of the European Parliament has announced a number of measures to contain the spread of epidemic and to safeguard Parliament's core activities.

The current precautionary measures adopted by the European Parliament to contain the spread of COVID-19 do not affect work on legislative priorities. Core activities are reduced, but maintained to ensure that the institution's legislative, budgetary, scrutiny functions are maintained.

Following these decisions, the next AFCO Committee meeting will take place on 24 September from 13.45 - 15.45 and 16.45 - 18.45 (Brussels and via videoconference).

On 24 September 2020, the Committee on Constitutional Affairs will hold a public remote hearing on the 'Transnational lists and the Spitzenkandidaten principle', bringing together both internal and external experts who will discuss with AFCO Members the issues of transnational lists and the lead candidates system, based on lessons to be drawn from the last European elections and following inter-institutional nominations’ cycle.

Paulo Rangel (EPP) will present his draft opinion, AFCO is to provide to LIBE committee on the implementation of the Framework Decision on the European Arrest Warrant (FDEAW), an emblematic legal instrument of judicial cooperation in criminal matters adopted by the Council before the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon.

At their meeting of 1st September, AFCO Members will vote on four draft opinions.

The AFCO committee will hear Mr Michael Roth, President of the Council of the European Union, Minister of State for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. He will discuss with the Members the priorities of the German Presidency in the field of competence of AFCO committee.
